"Sarah's Namebrella"
by Linda Berry |
|

“Will you
sign my umbrella?” asked Sarah
Busby of Grand Lake, Louisiana
as women anglers from across the
U. S. and around the world
registered for the final
tournament of the 2006 Women’s
Bassmaster Tour on Bull Shoals
Lake, in Theodosia, Missouri in
September. Her enthusiasm was
contagious and her mission was
apparent as she stood patiently
waiting for autographs to be
placed on the umbrella she had
won at a drawing at the Lake
Dardanelle tournament
registration in Russellville,
Arkansas just three weeks
earlier.

Renee Brisendine, co-angler from Eden, NC
adds her autograph to Sarah's "Namebrella".
Sarah, a co-angler on
the WBT tour, is also a fan of all the women anglers. Her reason
for fishing the tour was to meet veteran anglers and learn more
about the battles women have had to endure in their quest to be
recognized in the sport of bass fishing. She was delighted at
the first tournament of the season on Neely Henry in Gadsden,
Alabama to be paired on Day 1 with Christie Thomas from Africa
and on Day 2 at the Lake Lewisville, Texas tournament with Tami Kashiwabara from
Japan. When she got Tami’s autograph, she insisted that Tami
sign it in her native Japanese writing style.
Dwight Busby, Sarah’s
husband has been her biggest fan and supporter ever since she
decided to fish the inaugural year of the WBT. Her dream almost
didn’t happen. While many of us were preparing for the premier
WBT tournament on Lake Lewisville, Texas last October 2005,
Sarah and her family were re-building their lives after losing
their home and most of their personal belongings to Hurricane
Rita. During the hurricane, they had evacuated to Mississippi
with only a few photos, some clothes and their bass boat.
Sarah was introduced
to bass fishing on a delayed honeymoon in Florida when she and
Dwight hired a guide and she hooked a “huge” bass. Despite the
coaching from the guide and Dwight, she lost the lunker, but the
memory and the thrill of the battle to get it to the boat was
enough to inspire her. Her mother hunted and the family went
crabbing when she was growing up in Jennings, Louisiana. Sarah
started bass fishing in 1993 and started tournament fishing in
1997. In addition to fishing with her husband in the Angler’s
Choice couples tournaments, she was also a member of the Lake
Area Lady Anglers.
Sarah is excited about
the 2007 WBT Tour, especially the tournament scheduled on the
Red River in Shreveport, Louisiana in September. It will be the
first event that her husband will be able to attend. Dwight is a
heavy equipment operator and has been working non-stop, helping
with the clean-up and re-building from Hurricane Katrina.
The “Namebrella” is
Sarah’s inspiration to fish the tour. She is in the process of
finding a way to preserve it so that the signatures do not fade.
She wants to be able to show it to her children and
grandchildren and point to each signature and share her
experiences and let them know that they should always follow
their dream because anything is possible.
She will be sponsored
in 2007 by Tommasi Brothers of Lake Charles, Michael J. LeBlanc
Construction Company, Gina LeBlanc of Little Angels Photography
and Ray Thibodeaux. Sarah always takes a gift back to her
sponsors from each tournament.
