I Have Been Blessed
by Sammie Jo Denyes

Electrical Fire in my house this weekend, I apologize for not getting back to anyone if you were trying to reach me.

I worked a double at work waitressing on friday and friday night, came home and decided i needed to go to sleep since i had a double on saturday as well. Unfortunately my night was filled with anything but sleep, i tossed and turned, stared at the TV etc.. i had just bought an electirc fireplace since they were 1/2 off at Lowes and it is more economical than running my heater. i would get cold turn it on and it would smell something terrible, like fish to be exact. After looking through the manual it said in the beginning it could have an Aroma too it. well they were not kidding. so throughout the night i turned it on and would wake up in about 15 minutes turn it off because it smelled so bad.. i was awake from 12am till after 2am and at that point my TV and lights went off and then came back on.. well we know this made me think it was ghost or something in the house so i did not close my eyes again until after 5am...um huh but i did so without the fireplace on, at this point i turned the big unit on.. i woke up at 7 am and called work and said i would appreciate someone else covering the morning shift, i would be in for the night shift.. they were cool with that........lindsay and i goofed off all day etc.........around 3:30pm she was outside talking to her friends and i was inside cleaning my bedroom, i had the fan on in my room and also had turned the electric fireplace on in the livingroom 25 to 30 minutes earlier. i walked out the room and smelled well FISH.. i was looking at my clothes thinking about the last time i went fishing and perhaps didn't wash something that obviously need it., lindsay walks in and said mom something is smoking, i said does it smell like fish to you?we both walked into the living room and the smoke started pouring from behind my TV. I grabbed the phone, pulled the TV out and black was climbing the wall and smoke was boiling out. I told Lindsay to Run down the hill and grab Billy, the Maintenace Man.. I dialed 911...........opened the front door and covered my face with my ! shirt. 9 11 ensured me the fire department was on the way, in the meantime i asked her if i should turn off breakers, grab the fire extinguisher or what? i didn't want to watch all i owned burn to the ground.. she insisted i get Outside........on the way out i am looking around to see what i can get out.. of course i grab 6 rod and reels from my rod rack by the door and for whatever reason, my electric and phone bill that was lying on the desk and some papers i needed turned back into the front office before monday.. hmmmmmmmmyeah i know........clothing or nothing like that ever crossed my mind.. as i get outside throwing these things in the back of my truck i look to see where my truck keys are etc.. I see lindsay running from the maintenace mans apt to the office which lets me know she cannot find him.. then they both come running up the hill.... as they get here we all pile back inside so i can show him whats going on and help anyway i can and lindsay comes in and once i realize she is in here panting away i tell her to get outside NOW! at this point the smell is consuming me and i am getting nausea.. i tell Billy i am stepping outside and advise him to do the same.. he turns the breakers off and steps outside... as i exit the door i see lindsay bent over and is breathing rapidly.. i tell her to relax all is going to be ok, just to calm herself down..... at this point she looks at me and says mom i don't feel right? i said Lin you are having an overdose of Adrenaline and are going to hyperventilate if you do not slow and maintain your breathing.. at this point she says mom, my chest is hurting BAD.. I grab her and set her down and she is sweating profusely and her breathing is about 60 breaths a minute... i tell Billy to hold her and during all this I am still on the phone with 911.. i said mam please send me an Ambulance, my 16 daughter is having chest pain and hyperventilating... i run back into the house to grab my blood pressure cuff and a towel... I get back to her and as i have done for years with my kid! s i use humor to take their minds off their problems at the time.. I am using a calm voice and letting her know she is overreacting and needs to get it back together because i am starving to death and we were about to go eat... at this point  she is about to passout and is complaining continously that her chest is hurting and she cannot breath.. her bloodpressure is through the roof and her heart rate is 168.........at this time i see my neighbor pull in (a state trooper) and i holler for him and all i can say is HELP......he runs over and grabs lindsay and starts to try and calm her, he grabs his radio trying to get someone to help.... FINALLY the first cop car pulls up and stands there.........then a few minutes later the fire truck shows up...........then FINALLY the ambulance.... they take her to the hospital and we spend the next two hours there trying to get her heart rate down and breathing under control... i drenched her in cool water as her body temperature was through the roof.......she had smoke inhilation, hyperventilation and anxiety attack and overheated...............the doctor came in and said we think she is going to be alright, at this point i knew i could let my guard down somewhat, i said doctor now that she is ok, i think i am going to fall out now... It took a minimum of 5 years off my life to hold my child and watch her with chest pain and unable to breath and know all i could do was talk to her to try and control it.. i felt useless.....and still wasn't sure she was going to be ok........we were out of our apartment from Saturday until Monday evening.. but the main thing is we were ok..........
The Morale of this Story? what caused the fire was faulty receptacle.. but the fireplace was pulling alot of amps on a different outlet and set off the faulty receptacle... do I have bad luck? sure seems that way lately.. But I also have had an angel with me along the way... my mom told me years ago that my grandmas prayers throughout my life were bottled up even though she isn't with me anymore that god still hears those prayers... My grandma was my heart and the reason i know god today...after i worked my double friday i was so tired, i could not figure out why i could not sleep and why every 15 minutes i kept waking up.... turned out that when i left that fireplace on for 30 minutes the fire happened.......................had i of fallen asleep with it on, i would not be here telling this story today, nor would my child..................I am not only lucky, I am blessed..................
